What kinds of programs take place at YIVO?
YIVO presents programs on Jewish history and culture, with a focus on exploring the diversity of East European Jewish life throughout its 1000+ year history, and its influence on American Jewish culture. Program formats include lectures, conferences, film screenings, and concerts.
I don't live in New York. Are there programs I can watch/classes I can take online?
Many of our programs are videotaped and can be seen on our YouTube channel or at our Video & Audio Archive.
In January 2016, we launched YIVO’s Shine Online Educational Series, with classes that can be taken at your own pace, anywhere in the world.
Where is YIVO? How do I get there?
YIVO is located at 15 West 16th Street in New York City, not far from Union Square. It is accessible by many subway and bus lines and can also offer visitors a special discount on parking. Click here for more details.
Where are YIVO programs held?
Unless otherwise stated, all YIVO programs are held at the YIVO Institute at 15 West 16th Street, between Fifth Avenue and the Avenue of the Americas (6th Avenue). View YIVO on a map.
Most programs take place in the Great Hall or Auditorium, on the ground level, or the Kovno Room on the second floor.
Is your facility handicapped accessible?
The Center for Jewish History is ADA-compliant. All YIVO public programs are wheelchair accessible. A limited number of assistive listening devices are available for deaf and hard of hearing individuals upon request at the box office (Auditorium events only).
How early should I get to a YIVO program?
We recommend arriving fifteen minutes prior to the start of an event. This will allow enough time for our security, box office, and registration procedures. Please note that purchasing advance tickets or registering for an event in advance will minimize your wait time.
How do I volunteer for the public programs department?
Please see our Volunteer at YIVO page.
Can YIVO publish my book? Will YIVO consider my performance/book/project for a program?
YIVO is not a publisher and does not generally accept unsolicited projects for publication. If your book relies on research in our archives and library collections, we welcome hearing about your project. Please send an email to info@yivo.org to let us know what you're working on.
YIVO is happy to review your project for a possible public program. To be considered, contact our Public Programs department with a description of your project, and the speakers or artists involved:
