As part of the first Yiddish New York festival (December 24-29), YIVO presents Highlights and Treasures from the YIVO Archives, an inside look at YIVO’s collection with examples from its rare book holdings, manuscripts, and sound recordings. Examples featured will include early Yiddish imprints from the 18th century, manuscripts by Sholem Aleichem and Bashevis Singer, Yiddish theater posters, and more. This presentation will be given by YIVO’s Head Librarian Lyudmila Sholokhova, Senior Archivist Fruma Mohrer, and Matt Temkin, Consultant to the Max and Frieda Weinstein Archive of YIVO Sound Recordings.


About the Participants

Fruma Mohrer is YIVO's Senior Archivist. She holds a B.A. in History and a Graduate Diploma in Education from McGill University, a J.D. from New York Law School, and is a member of the New York Bar. Fruma Mohrer has worked on a wide range of archival projects at YIVO. She was a co-editor with Marek Web of the Guide to the YIVO Archives and was the project director of the Guide's website version at yivoarchives.org. She was also the project director of "The YIVO Digital Archive on Jewish Life in Poland" (polishjews.yivoarchives.org).

Lyudmila Sholokhova is Head Librarian and Acting Chief Archivist at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Lyudmila Sholokhova was born in Kiev, Ukraine. She graduated from the Lviv State Conservatory with a Masters Degree in Musicology. She received a Ph.D. in Musicology from the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine in Kiev in 2000 (Dissertation, The Formation and Development of Jewish Musical Folklore Studies in 20th-Century Czarist Russia). From 1989 to 2001, Sholokhova worked at the Musical and Judaica Departments of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. She moved to the United States in 2001, and began working at the YIVO Institute in 2003. She became YIVO’s Head Librarian in 2011 and in 2014 became Acting Chief Archivist of the YIVO Archives and co-Director of the International YIVO Vilna Collections Project between YIVO, the Lithuanian National Library, and the Lithuanian Central State Archives in Vilnius. Sholokhova is the author of the catalogue ““Phonoarchive of  Jewish Musical Heritage” (Kiev, 2001), and co-author of the multivolume edition “Historical Collection of Jewish Musical Folklore, 1912-1947” (Kiev, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 1997-present).

Matt Temkin is a drummer/percussionist, musicologist, audio engineer, and yiddishist. He has been involved with the YIVO Max and Frieda Weinstein Archives of YIVO Sound Recordings since 2003, and is currently curator of the "YIVO on WEVD: Historic Radio Programs Podcast."
